I don't have a problem with people calling me "mate" (although it doesn't happen as often as if I was a man - I suppose) I sometmes call sb "mate", and even my girl - friends. (Most of my girl - friends call each other "babe" and believe me - that is far worse!
)
I'm in my 2nd year at the uni but I don't speak "Queen English"
I suppose it's because of the way I was brought up (amongst "common people"
)
Anyway, we all have expressions we like - and ones that we don't. We just have to learn to live with it. Or (as someone has already suggested) pack our bags and leave
