How can you guys critisise English regional 'slang' words? These have been used for decades and are often specific to a certain area of England only.
'Mate' is a word that actually shows respect as it means 'friend' and is much more personal than Miss, Mr etc. If you told a Brummie you dont want to be called 'mate', they wouldnt understand as its got a positive meaning. Like older people calling you love, darling or pet (even though the last one means 'a house animal'!
Its got nothing to do with old fashioned or current - its a part of English language and has to be both learned and accepted as it comes. We seem to be forgetting- we live in England! You wouldnt expect Brummies to change their dictionaries because Poles 'dont feel comfortable being called mate'!
Arent you being a little bit pathetic? If an Englishman came to Poland and stated he was offended by being said NARA to, i very much doubt it would change anything!

It's not a regional slang word, "mate" is used all over England

Certain English individuals don't like being called "mate" by the strangers as word "sir" shows more respect for them but as a vast minority they have to accept that.

Personally I don't mind being called "mate" at all.
